Brandy

Brandy is settling well into life here in our home.  I didn’t change her name because she was almost a year old when I brought her home and didn’t want to confuse her even more.  She was freaked out on the ride home and spent the next two days in self-imposed seclusion but after that she was fine.  She is a very affectionate and playful cat, and we spend quite a bit of time during the day playing “go get it” when I pitch balls into the other room for her to run and get.  Sometimes she brings the little puff balls back, and other times she will treat them as soccer balls and she is Lionel Messi.  She is very funny and sweet.  The other toys she likes best are the flying feathers on a fishing rod, she is particularly fond of Bluey the blue feathers and loves to chase them around and jump up to catch them.  She is very athletic and strong; when she stretches out on her scratching post she is over three feet long.

She must take after her dad; she likes to eat and nap, too.  She wakes me up each morning by grooming my beard, which lets me know it’s time for breakfast.  She has me very well trained.  Brandy is an enthusiastic eater and she also gets a few treats during the day for being a very good girl.  Brandy did not care for the water fountain I got her, but she loves to drink water from my glass (see photo) so I retired the fountain and put out small bowls of fresh water daily at her feeding station, on the coffee table and upstairs in my bedroom.  I can tell by the clumping litter that she is getting enough to eat and drink, as well as the emptier bowls, lol.

She was perfectly potty trained when she came home, and she is quite fastidious, too.  She grooms her coat regularly and enjoys being brushed.  Her coat is lustrous and she hardly sheds at all.  She looks very elegant and beautiful, and Brandy loves to be petted, especially having her head and chin scratched.  She loves to flop down and roll over and stretch out for a belly rub.   I could spend hours every day petting her, she is such a joy to be with.  She hasn’t spent a lot of time in my lap yet, but I think that will change when the weather gets colder.  She likes to sleep at my feet or on a cushion in the bed next to my head.  Brandy loves to bring her toys to bed, especially Bluey.  We then play with Bluey on the bed for about 15 minutes before we settle down to sleep.

She has the cutest little meow, and she gets very chatty while we are playing.  She is never loud or intrusive, but she is curious, so I’ve had to be careful about going down to the cellar as she likes to explore down there.   She has free range over my 6 room house and the sunporch, but I do not allow her outside nor in the attic or cellar to keep her safe.  I am renovating the other half of my duplex house so hopefully by winter, she will have twice as much space to roam in.  She likes to nap in her cat condo, on my desk, in my bedroom window, on the coffee table, sofa, or next to my easy chair.

Brandy likes to watch the squirrels and the birds in the backyard, and she loves sitting in my bedroom window on the second floor so she can survey the whole yard.  She doesn’t like to wear a collar or harness, which I’ve tried to get her to wear, but I will persist as I want to take her to my sister’s home for a weekend visit which is 90 minutes away and will require the car carrier.  My sister has two lovely cats and I know Brandy will enjoy meeting them.  I wonder about getting another cat but I’ve only ever had one cat at a time.  Brandy doesn’t seem lonely but I want her to have the best and happiest life she can.  I am retired and spend most days at home, so she always has company.  She makes me laugh all the time and she is such a sweet, smart cat and she knows I adore her and I think that is mutual.   I am very lucky she chose me, and I am grateful to The Animal Haven for making it possible.  I appreciated the bag of goodies you all sent with Brandy, the treats and toys were much enjoyed!
